ANNOUNCEMENTS
ANNUAL NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING AT MOORTEN BOTANICAL GARDEN
The second annual meeting of our neighborhood organization was held March 26 at the Moorten Botanical Garden in The Mesa. Clark Moorten was our gracious host for this year’s meeting and agreed to continue providing his special desert habitat garden for our annual meetings in the coming years. We thank Clark for donating his time and energy to support building our neighborhood’s character and value. Once a year our bylaws require we meet together to reinforce our volunteer group and to discuss and vote on issues that affect our neighborhood.
Our annual meetings normally surface new projects for the coming year that may need the added energy of a dedicated Committee within The Mesa Neighborhood Organization. One of this year’s new projects was voiced to our City Manager, David Ready, during our meeting. Ingi Sorensen asked for City support for a Traffic-Calming Study on South Palm Canyon. Mr. Ready confirmed he would support a request from within The Mesa Neighborhood Organization to obtain a traffic calming solution for safety issues on South Palm Canyon. (The following week a working group was formed and meetings were conducted to formally petition the City for support of a plan that will incorporate proven traffic calming procedures on South Palm Canyon.) Mr. Ready voiced his personal support for our volunteers who are making make a difference in the community.
The city of Palm Springs supports our neighborhood through a partnership with the Neighborhood Involvement Committee. As a result, Sgt. Anderson of the Palm Springs Police Department attended the meeting and presented statistics showing The Mesa has the lowest neighborhood crime rate in Palm Springs. Sgt. Anderson introduced our dedicated patrol officers Leslie Kasal and Mike Barredo who are assigned The Mesa beat and discussed ways to ensure crime is actively discouraged in The Mesa. Lee Husfeldt, Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations, was present to reinforce the support of the City in helping our group meet goals and encourage our projects. Lee is our key contact within the City of Palm Springs and she discussed how the City has many programs that work hand-in-hand with the neighborhoods to accomplish goals. We appreciate Lee’s support of our neighborhood.
Please plan to attend our future annual meetings that will now be scheduled in March to take advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures after the change to daylight savings time each year. We changed our meeting date from February to March this year to take advantage of the outdoor meeting venue at Clark’s Moorten Botanical Garden.
Please continue to visit our neighborhood website, www.psmesa.com, to review events of interest in your community. Daniel Hogan is our volunteer webmaster who dedicates his time working on the look and feel of our website where minutes of our meetings are available. There is also a calendar of upcoming events and announcements affecting our unique neighborhood.
During our annual meetings, we recognize our committees that foster public improvements and preserve the unique history of The Mesa and the neighbors who volunteer their time, support and energy to them. The Neighborhood Blade Sign Committee reviewed for the group the status of distinctive neighborhood blade signs that will be mounted by the city of Palm Springs above our existing street signs to highlight the special character of our neighborhood. The Chair of our new committee, Rosemarie Vacano, asked John Harrell to present the blade sign program at our annual meeting. John’s persuasive presentation obtained sponsors for the installation of these exceptional introductions into our neighborhood. The cost for the signs was raised by tax deductable contributions from your neighbors to support their community. The signs are scheduled to be installed in September or October.
The Mesa Neighborhood Organization is one of 23 city neighborhood organizations in Palm Springs. Since our first Annual Meeting last year, our organization has supported becoming a member of the Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Organization. Our membership within the city’s structure provides a strong partnership to support the goals of our neighborhood community.
For our second year, your neighborhood volunteers are planning to feature a more robust calendar of projects and events. Some of the new experiences and events will include hiking with our new mountain trail group, a pet photo shoot on our website, a neighborhood cleanup day, a South Palm Canyon traffic-calming study, the installation of our neighborhood blade signs, a Street Watch group, and our annual member appreciation picnic. Your neighborhood group needs your support. Try to become a dues-supporting member by contributing $75.00 per year to help with our expenses. Everyone who lives in The Mesa is a member of our organization and welcome at all our meetings and events. However, we need as many sponsoring members as possible to fund the projects that increase the value of your home and neighborhood.
