Gate House Committee
Several members of our neighborhood saw a need to preserve some of the history of The Mesa by ensuring
the Old Gate House on El Portal was not demolished during new construction planned for the corner lot on
South Palm Canyon and El Portal. A neighborhood committee was formed to research the history of The
Mesa Gate House and study how the El Portal entrance might serve as the gateway into our community to
enhance the charm or our neighborhood.
The Gate House Committee has determined the Gate house is on City property and not privately owned.
The structure has been designated as a historical site by the City of Palm Springs, but the structure is not
adequately protected from demolition. The developer of the lot on the corner of El Portal and South Palm
Canyon is working with The Mesa Gate House Committee to obtain approval by the City of Palm Springs for
a landscape plan that will enhance the El Portal entrance into our community. Plans are currently being drawn
to help discuss and negotiate with the City of Palm Springs on options available to landscape the area
around The Gate House.
