MESA MASH NEIGHBORHOOD GET-TOGETHER
The Mesa Mash was designed to bring together our neighbors and create an opportunity to celebrate our wonderful community.
The event was a great success due to the hard work and creative genius of many of your friends, neighbors and relatives.
Dennis Duca, our neighborhood organization’s Treasurer, was instrumental in selecting the theme, coordinating with City officials for approval and establishing a date for our block party.
Did you hear The Mesa Mash theme radiating from Mike and Gene’s front yard sound system? Dennis wrote the words for The Mesa Mash theme song and was able to convince his talented sister in New York to produce an exclusive “one of a kind” recording of our song that brings to light the history and special flavor of The Mesa.
Dennis’ sister, Renee Leniart, with her band Hot Flash gave of their time and energy to produce a custom recording of our neighborhood song for the event. Dennis has an extremely talented sister who is very giving and provided the unique song to give praise to the special character of our neighborhood.
Dennis also tapped the unique floral arrangement talents of his close friend Victoria Winter to arrange our flower arrangements, which added elegance to our neighborhood picnic setting. In addition, Dennis had his 1968 Chevy Impala Super Sport convertible on display for the enjoyment of the baby boomers among us as well as collectable car fans of all ages.
The City of Palm Springs also honored us by introducing Officers Mario Kasal and Mike Barredo who were raised in Palm Springs and will be our first points of contact to solve any neighborhood security issues.
Mayor pro tem Ginny Foat honored us with a visit and expressed her appreciation of the neighborhood organizations in Palm Springs. Mayor pro tem Foat is the primary sponsor/supporter of neighborhood issues on the City Council. Lee Husfeldt, Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations and a strong champion of our community, stopped by to support our event.
The support for our party was strong and ensured the event’s success. Two of our neighbors, Joseph Dunn and Ron, could not attend the event due to out-of-town commitments, but chose to volunteer to help with some of the expenses by paying for our refreshments. Mike Slattery and Gene helped with the organization and setup of the event and paid for the beautiful designer cakes that also picked up the theme of our neighborhood event.
Could you believe the balloons? Keith Wisot and Joe paid for the arched balloon gateway to our party. There were even enough balloons to impress the kids. Many neighbors commented that the colorful archway “de-stressed” their day as they entered thru the arch. Many others helped with the smooth flow of the event. Special thanks are expressed to John, Jane, Pam, Pat, Catherine and Tom, Gary and so many others for their work in setting up, cleaning up and providing the great food for our enjoyment.
Next year we should bring cards with the recipes for some of the event’s special dishes to share with others.

SECURITY TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Security Tips for the upcoming holidays from your Palm Springs Neighborhood Organization Crime and Safety program.
With the economy poor and a rising number of people out of work, here are a few tips to prevent you from becoming a victim during the upcoming holidays. Home security and your personal safety should receive increased attention during this time of year. Burglars look for easy opportunities, so outsmart them by focusing on the following:
· Lock all doors and windows every time you leave your home.
· Use an alarm system every time you leave or sleep.
· Do not leave any valuable items visible from the outside of your car or home.
· Use a safe bolted to the floor or wall to secure valuables.
· Lock all valuables up when you leave including your desk and files.
· Consider having a motion light at the front and rear approach to your home.
· Leave valuables only in the trunk of your car.
· Communicate with your neighbors to keep an eye on your home.
· Have your neighbors pick up newspapers and mail daily when you are away, or have the delivery held.
· Make sure your neighbors have a phone number where you can be reached when you are away.
· Do not display large amounts of cash in public.
· Do not hesitate to call 911.
· Immediately report anything suspicious.
· Report unsafe traffic issues.
· Report any crimes immediately to the police.
· Communicate with your Neighborhood Police Officers that are assigned to your area.
When leaving your house, pause a moment and ask yourself: “If I left my keys inside, how would I get back in?” If you can figure out a way, so can the burglar and he knows where to find most spare keys.
