2011 MESA MASH BLOCK PARTY A WONDERFUL SUCCESS

On a warm and sunny afternoon, Saturday November 13th, 2011, about 50 Mesa-ites and friends gathered on West El Camino Way to celebrate TMNO’s 3rd Annual MESA MASH BLOCK PARTY/PICNIC. The event began at Noon and ended around 4:00 PM.

TMNO bought six 8x10 foot red canopy tents which were set up side-by-side on the street. Clark Moorten loaned us round tables, folding chairs and table- cloths. Two tables were set up for “Potluck” dishes and beverages; two BBQs were available if someone wanted to grill some food.

There were many delicious foods to try: homemade salsas, dips, hummus, Texas Caviar, Chinese Chicken Salad, cole slaw, roasted chicken, a roast with potatoes, homemade cookies, etc. So many things to sample and enjoy - you never know what will be available at a “Potluck”, that’s part of the fun!

Fellow Mesa-ite Dick Walsh has a business which makes LOGO promotional items. He made us an initial batch of items with “The Mesa” logo – women’s and men’s t-shirts, tank tops and caps for $20 each; wonderfully soft golf shirts for $30 each. These items were on display and quite a few of them sold.

Soon you will be able to see what these items look like on our website and you will be able to order, either from what we still have in stock or you will be able to order the exact size and color you would like. We have a nice profit from the sale of these items – this profit goes into our Treasury to help pay for our projects as we no longer collect dues from residents. The project currently being worked on is the landscaping around and lighting of the Gatehouse on El Portal.

The Block Party/Picnic was a wonderful success. Hope to see many more Mesa- ites there next year as it is a great opportunity to meet neighbors, see friends and make contacts.

We would like to thank everyone who attended, who volunteered. It was fun!

ART AUCTION FUND RAISER

On the balmy evening of June 11th, about 40 residents and friends of The Mesa gathered at Rosie’s vacation rental house on Lilliana for a BBQ, wine tasting and fundraising silent art auction.

The party was organized to raise needed funds for The Mesa Neighborhood Organization’s #1 project for 2010 -- the desertscaping of the gatehouse on El Portal. Since it was voted upon at the Annual Meeting on March 25, 2010, that TMNO would no longer collect dues from residents, it is necessary to find creative and fun ways to raise funds for projects such as this one.

All food, drink and art were generously donated by Mesa residents. No funds were used from our Treasury; we were able to raise more than $1100 from the silent art auction.

We dined on delicious appetizers, such as stuffed mushrooms, crab dip, deviled eggs; barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs accompanied by various salads and baked beans; a chocolate pudding cake and homemade cookies were served for dessert.

Tom Donahue and Michael Slattery went to Cost Plus World Market and selected several wines with the help of World Market’s wine expert, Jeff. Among the wines selected were Blue Pirate 2007 (Pinot Noir from Dundee, OR), Loredona 2008 (Riesling from Manteca, CA), Maxwell Creek 2008 (Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley, CA) and Toasted Head 2007 (Chardonnay from Russian River, CA). Jeff gave Tom and Michael a 25% discount on a case of wine as it was for our fundraising event. (It's a great idea to support our local businesses, by the way. For example, go to World Market for wine, ask for Jeff, tell him you are from The Mesa and he may be willing to give you a discount.)

Due to the size of the house, we had to limit the number of guests. However, we are looking for larger locations for future fundraisers where we can accommodate more residents. We are also looking for some of your creative ideas for fundraisers. We are looking to hold a neighborhood garage sale in the fall, perhaps in the empty parking lot belonging to Moorten’s Botanical Garden. We are also considering having another wine tasting at Moorten’s, which has been the location of our Annual Meeting for the last couple of years and can accommodate a much larger number of guests than a private residence can.

Please send us an e-mail with your thoughts and ideas!
Thank you.

THE MESA NEIGHBORHOOD
UNVEILS NEW BLADE SIGNS

At 10:00 am on Saturday March 27, 2010, approximately 20 residents of The Mesa congregated at the corner of Ridge Road and El Camino Way to formally unveil the newly installed blade signs sporting the logo and identity of our southwest Palm Springs neighborhood.

The Blade Sign Committee – composed of five residents of The Mesa – began work almost one year ago with a deliberative design phase to incorporate a historical symbol of The Mesa into blade signs.

The Committee designed a logo for The Mesa using the gatehouse on El Portal as the backdrop. The new logo was approved by the Advisory Committee of The Mesa Neighborhood Organization (TMNO) and the City’s Neighborhood Involvement Committee. The Mesa residents can now see the visible result of the Committee’s efforts.

This gatehouse on El Portal will be the focus of our efforts in 2010. We want to beautify the area surrounding the gatehouse with desertscape and lighting. A meeting of the El Portal Gateway Committee will be scheduled in the near future and residents interested in participating are encouraged to check our website www.psmesa.com for date and time.

Just as the blade signs were a visible result of our efforts in 2009, we want the El Portal Gatehouse project to similarly reflect our efforts in 2010.

All signs were adopted by Mesa neighbors and here is a list of who adopted which sign:

Camino Descanso & Camino Barranca - Francis
Crestview & Overlook - Mary and Joe
Mesa & Camino Alturas - Gene & Michael
Mesa & Camino Buena Vista - Dan & Tom
Mesa & Camino Carmelita - Pete & Greg
Mesa & Crestview - Meir & Michael
Mesa & El Camino - Keith
Mesa & El Portal - Tom & Gayle
Mesa & Overlook - Gary H. & Rosie
Palm Canyon & Camino Carmelita - Bob P.
Palm Canyon & Camino Descanso - Bob & Pamela
Palm Canyon & Camino Encanto - Irene and John
Palm Canyon & Crestview - Tom D. & Denny M.
Palm Canyon & El Camino - Dennis & David
Palm Canyon & El Portal - Patti & Bud
Palm Canyon & Lilliana - Rosie

Thank you to all those involved in this project. We trust that everyone will enjoy the new signs. We are proud of living in The Mesa and our new blade signs show some of that pride!
